Yosemite, Minarets advance in baseball playoffs

Both Yosemite and Minarets high schools baseball teams advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of their respective divisions in Central Section playoffs Monday.

In D-IV, on the road against the No. 8 seed Dos Palos (11-2-2), the No. 9 Yosemite Badgers (11-14) won 4-1 after opening its first two innings with three total scores.

Freshman Tyler Matyshock got the win on the mound for the Badgers, while Tyler Wallace helped out at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

The Badgers will travel to Firebaugh Thursday to face the No. 1 seeded Eagles (24-3), with the game beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Minarets (17-8-1), seeded No. 4 in D-V, roundly defeated No. 13 Coalinga (12-13-1) 5-1 at home.

Riley Hillerman, often relied on this season by the Mustangs, pitched a complete game with one run allowed and six strikeouts, as well as no walks.

The Mustangs next face No. 5 seed Sierra Pacific (17-11-1) at home Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Neither the Badger or Mustangs softball teams entered the playoffs this year.
