Blake Action makes history

Blake Action, 15, of Ahwahnee, has been a slalom racer on the Yosemite Ski Team since he was 7 years old.

Due to the lack of snow during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, Action and his teammates had not skied on their home course, and were forced to travel hundreds of miles to compete at other ski areas.

This season was different. With snow at Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area (formerly Badger Pass Ski Area), and when Action had the chance to show what he could do on his ‘home’ course, he was ready - winning the Silver Ski Championship held in late March.

The race in Yosemite National Park was the first slalom race and longest running in California history. As the fastest gentleman skier, Action will be immortalized with his name engraved on the 56th plaque enshrined at the resort’s lodge.

The race included skiers from varied Sierra ski areas including Yosemite, Bear Valley, Dodge Ridge, China Peak, Squaw Valley and Diamond Peak. The young racers that have trained for almost a decade ran their fastest times over four race runs in two days of competition. To top it off, the idyllic setting of sunshine and a hard packed, icy race slope made for an optimal course in the middle of Yosemite National Park.

Blake rose before the sun to train and race ever since joining Yosemite Ski Team.

Ski racing differs from other sports because of the adaptation of the racers to the conditions of the slope surface. It is a mental game as well as a physical feat. Blake became the USSA Central Series Ski Champion in 2014, and is 2016 Silver Ski Champion.

This race has become a highlight in Blake's career, as the Yosemite Ski Team got to run their races with the exuberant support of family, friends and the local community. The pressure was on and he delivered, as a Mountain Area local youth has not won the Silver Ski at "Badger Pass" since 2011.

Blake won the Gold Medal on Saturday, the Silver Medal on Sunday, and the Silver Ski Cup Champion Trophy for the combined fastest racing totals. His sister Emerson Action, 13 of Ahwahnee, won the Silver Medal on Sunday in the under 14 girls category.

The Yosemite Ski Team had multiple medal winners in various categories:

*  Brenden Byrne won fourth and sixth place in the under 12 boys category

*  Madison Parker won sixth and ninth place in under 12 girls category

*  Dominic Hughes and Dylan Parker gave it their all and put in a great showing

The Yosemite Winter Club (YWC) is the oldest winter sports club in California with original members like Cecil B. DeMille. Blake Action, as a member of the YWC, has been awarded scholarships for ski camps that have contributed greatly to his ski race training. He said that he is very thankful to the YWC for their support which enabled him to grow and learn while enhancing his athletic achievements and helping to make his dreams come true.
