Minarets girls lose in state playoffs

The Minarets girls basketball team’s season ended Wednesday night after a 53-32 loss to Mission Prep College Preparatory Catholic High School in the opening round of the D-V CIF SoCal Regional Championships.

The Mustangs (19-7), seeded No. 15, traveled to San Luis Obispo to face the No. 2 Royals (22-9) in their home gym, and were unable to contain Mission Prep’s top two scorers Jacqueline San Julea and Noelle Laird, who combined for a total 27 points.

For Minarets, senior Patricia Thomasian led the way with nine points, followed by senior Danielle Johnson with seven, junior Kristy Berry with six, and senior Kelea Kamalani with five, three of them at the free-throw line. Scoring was closed out for the Mustangs by two points each from seniors Natalie Chamberlain and Madison Pearson, and sophomore Ellery Meade.

With the win, Mission Prep moves on to face No. 7 Oxford Academy of Cypress Saturday at 6 p.m.
