More than 200 players, the most in several years, are expected to participate in Sierra Mountain Little League opening day ceremonies starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the fields behind the Oakhurst Community Center.
Opening day ceremonies will include a welcome by league President Dalene Stephens, introduction of each team with its special walk out song, playing of the National Anthem, Little League Pledge, team photos, raffle winner for the team who has the most team members present, and a raffle to determine what player gets to throw out the opening day pitch, and the introduction of a special guest.
The league is made up of two major teams (Mets, Cardinals); four minor A teams (Angels, Padres, Rangers, Giants); seven minor B coach pitch teams (Red Sox, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Astros, Marlins, Cubs, A’s); four t-ball teams (River Cats, River Bandits, Reds, Rockies); and one challenger team (Dodgers).
Concessions will be open, and games start at 10 a.m. on both fields, with t-ball and majors being the first games. The last game will be played at 6:30 p.m..
The league is supported by 14 area business sponsors, and an additional 18 business sign sponsors.
“We have a 21 member board who has worked hard to have a balanced budget, create a beautiful new website, and increase fundraising and sponsorships,” Stephens said.
Yosemite Little League in Coarsegold held its opening day Feb. 27.
A majors game was played between the Tigers and the Rockies, with the Tigers winning 10-6.
The Mud Hens played the Thunder in a minors game, with the Thunder pulling out a close 11-10 victory.
The league is made up of three major league teams (Cardinals, Rockies, Tigers), three minor league teams (Bats, Mud Hens, Thunder), four coach pitch teams (Angels, Pirates, Rangers, Red Sox), and two t-ball teams (Mariners, Padres).
