Badgers and Mustangs in Central Section basketball playoffs

The Yosemite High School boys (19-9, 7-3 North Sequoia League) and girls (15-14, 8-2 NSL) basketball teams enter the CIF Central Section playoffs seeded No. 10 and No. 8 in their respective divisions.

The boys team, seeded No. 10 in D-IV, will travel to Coalinga High School (21-6) to face the No. 7 ranked Horned Toads at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23. The Badgers lost to Coalinga 61-44 on Dec. 12, in a non-league game. A Badger win would give the team a Feb. 25 game against the winner of the Orosi/Granite Hills game.

Other teams in the first round of boys D-IV playoffs Tuesday (all higher seeds playing at home) are: No. 1 seed Immanuel vs. No. 16 Lindsay; No. 2 Granite Hills vs. No. 15 Orosi; No. 3 Kennedy vs. No. 14 Bishop Union; No. 4 Madera South vs. No. 13 Fowler; No. 5 Kerman vs. No. 12 Kingsburg; No. 6 Rosamond vs. No. 11 Taft; and No. 8 McFarland vs. No. 9 Bakersfield Christian.

The No. 8 seed Badger girls, playing in D-II, will welcome the No. 9 Selma Bears (15-14) to the Yosemite High gym at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. A win would pit the Badgers against the No. 1 seed Redwood (22-4) of Visalia on Feb. 26.

Other teams in the first round of girls D-II playoffs Wednesday are No. 5 Bakersfield vs. No. 12 Hoover; No. 6 Sierra vs. No. 11 Chavez; and No. 7 Monache vs. No. 10 Shafter. No. 1 seed Redwood, No. 2 Independence, No. 3 Lemoore, and No. 4 Tulare Western all have first-round byes.

In the boys D-V playoffs, Minarets High School (8-13, 4-4 West Sequoia League), seeded No. 9, will play on the road against the No. 8 seed Sierra Chieftains at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Other teams in the first round of boys D-V playoffs are No. 3 Tranquility vs. No. 14 Fresno Christian, No. 4 Laton vs. No. 13 California City, No. 5 Riverdale vs. No. 12 Wonderful College Prep Academy; No. 6 Liberty-Madera Ranchos vs. No. 11 Mendota; and No. 7 Farmersville vs. No. 10 Strathmore. No. 1 and 2 seeds Kern Valley and Caruthers have first-round byes.

The Minarets girls team (17-5, 8-2 WSL) got the No. 3 seed in D-V, and will play at home against No. 14 Laton at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. A win would give the Mustangs a Feb. 26 game with the winner of the Fowler/Farmersville game. The Mustangs have beaten Fowler three times this season.

Only No. 1 seed San Joaquin Memorial in girls D-IV has a bye week. Other teams in the first-round playoffs include: No. 2 Caruthers vs. No. 15 Fresno Christian; No. 4 Kern Valley vs. No. 13 California City; No. 5 Bakersfield Christian vs. No. 12 Rosamond; No. 6 Fowler vs. No. 11 Farmersville; and No. 7 Wonderful College Prep Academy vs. No. 10 Kennedy.
