Yosemite High School sophomore wrestler Peter Martinez, won the 195 pound weight class title at the Feb. 12 North Sequoia League Championship meet held in Kerman. Martinez, who was 22-6 on the season, pinned Sierra’s Quinn Butterfield in the second period to win the championship medal. In addition to Martinez, Yosemite senior Erik Johnson (220 pounds), junior Tyler Gaines (138 pounds), and freshman Diego Combs (128 pounds) each placed second in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Jesse De La Cruz placed third in the 152 pound weight class. All five Badgers advanced to the Sierra Sequoia Divisional Tournament at Shafter High School this Friday and Saturday. The top wrestlers in each weight class at Divisionals will advance to the CIF Central Section tournament in Lemoore on Feb. 27, the last step before the state tournament. The successful varsity team members provided an excellent example of hard work to the Yosemite Badger Youth Wrestling Club by assisting last Saturday during the club’s annual Mountain Mayhem K-8 Tournament at Yosemite High School. More than 100 youth wrestlers competed in 25 weight classes.
