Yosemite Badgers preparing for 2015-16 season

Yosemite High School varsity and JV football players, under the direction of new head coach JD Burnett, started summer practices last week.

Some 40 players were on the field for conditioning, and learning offense plays and defensive schemes of this year’s team, during non-contact drills.

Steven Schumaker, who will be a junior in the fall, was a lineman on the varsity last season and is looking forward to the new season.

“We’re not going to be 0-10 this year,” said the 6-foot-1, 250 pound Schumaker. “We are working hard and we are looking for a bigger and brighter season this year.”

“We hope to be competitive this year,” said 5-foot-11, 190 pound senior fullback Tanner Meeks, who is playing football for the the first time this year, after being a member of the NSL championship golf team last year.

Armando Villanueva is a 6-foot, 170 pound transfer student from San Diego, hopes to see some playing time at quarterback, and free safety this season along with last year’s returning QB, 5-foot-11, 170 pound Tristan Eames.

Villanueva played wide receiver, and free safety for Steele Canyon High School, a team with 75 players, last year.

“I haven’t played quarterback since my freshman year, but I hope to play some at that position this year,” Villanueva said.

In addition to Burnett, coaching staff members include Erik Peterson (defensive coordinator/defensive ends), Scott Rold (wide receivers), Brian Johnson (offensive line), Brent Cunnings (defensive line), Matt Pressly (running backs/linebackers), Pat Lynch (linebackers), and Jonas Garner (defensive backs).

The team participated in a passing camp last weekend at Mission Prep High School in San Luis Opisbo, and returned to the Yosemite practice field Monday. Summer practice will continue 4-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday through July 24.

The Badgers will have five home, and five away games this year.
