Oakhurst’s Yosemite Rivers Fly Shop, owned by fly fishing guide Jimmie Morales, will be celebrating its sixth year of operation with an open house 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Saturday, April 25, featuring fly tying and casting demonstrations, a barbecue, and raffle.
Appearing at the event will be Gene Kaczmarek who has been tying flies for more than 20 years and teaches beginner, intermediate, and advanced fly tying classes. He is noted for his demonstrations of advanced steel-head tying techniques at a number of the Federation of Fly Fishers and Western Fly Fishing shows ans clubs.
Kaczmarek is the recipient of the inaugural Northern California Council Federation of Fly Fishers “Ned Long Memorial Fly Tier of the Year” award.
Kaczmare, of Fremont, is a past federation Northern California Council president, and served on the federation’s board of directors for 18 years.
“Teaching is what is important to me,” Kaczmarek said. “We all should have the passion to want to pass on what we know and watch our students excel beyond our abilities.”
Wayne Luallen has tied most every type of fly he could get his vise clamped onto since 1974. He has demonstrated at numerous local, regional, national, and international events since 1980. He has received the Federation of Fly Fisher's Buz Buszek Memorial Fly Tying Award in 1991.
George Bovine has been fly fishing for the last 43 years, mostly for trout. He has taught fly fishing and casting for Sage rods, Clearwater House in Northern California, and several clubs and shops in the Bay Area.
Niel Poltz is a bass bug fanatic who is rapidly becoming a recognized boutique production tyer. He will be at the open house to demonstrate the creation of his bugs.
Doug McKinsey has been fly fishing since 1966 and has been a commercial fly tier since 1968. He has tied for nearly 50 years and will also be sharing his expertise at this event.
The Sierra Fly Fisher Guide crew will also be on hand to share their fishing wisdom and tips.
Shop hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday through the season.
