Fifth grade team wins tournament

The Yosemite fifth grade girls AAU basketball travel team went undefeated in winning its division in last weekend’s 14th Annual Spring Fling tournament.

The team, coached by Yosemite High School’s All-League basketball players Veronica Miller and Mattaya Brown, beat Sierra (18-14), Kerman (12-6), and Central Cal Chaos of Fresno (13-5).

The tournament, sponsored by the Yosemite Youth Basketball Association, featured more than 20 teams in four divisions.

Central Cal Swosh (Fresno) won both the sixth and seventh grade divisions, and Clovis North won the eighth grade title.

Yosemite’s sixth, seventh, and eighth grade teams finished second in their divisions.

Yosemite MVP players were Britney Allen (sixth grade), Karina Barnet (seventh grade), and Gracie Fries (eighth grade).

The tournament raises funds for the Yosemite Youth Basketball Association for uniforms, supplies, and entries to tournaments.

Tournament co-directors were Rick Slayton and Jeff Nichols.
