Once again, former Yosemite High mens and womens alumni made it back to Oakhurst for the holidays. A holiday basketball tradition conceived by Gary Blate, YHS girls basketball coach, was played Sunday night at the Harry S. Baker gym. 18 former Yosemite players participated in two very competitive games.
“I think this is something a lot of alumni look forward to,” Blate said. “We like holding this around the holidays because a lot of former players come back home.”
The night began with women’s game white vs. blue. The white team consisted of: Karras Blate Hacker (’05), Katie Menton (’07), Kaley Mumm (’14), Brittany Rasmussen (’03), and Julia Walsh (’14).
The Blue team participants were: Michelle Burton Lalau (’07), Darylyn Dierberger (’07), Sonya Eggleston (’06), Ashley Nichols Morrison (’07), Emily Ritchie (’07), and Ashley Stearns Lassos (’07).
It was actually a close well contested game. Blate’s former players were running the same offense back when they were wearing Badger blue. In the end, the Blue team defeated the White team 55 to 51. Stearns and Eggleston led the Blue team with 18 points each. Stearns ran the point to perfection, while Eggleston hit key 3-pointers. Stearns left Yosemite in 2006 as the all-time leader in assists (212) and was second all-time in scoring.
Menton, who played four years at Pepperdine University, led all scorers with 24 points for the White team. Mumm and Walsh each added 11. Menton looked like an all-star. Menton left YHS as the all-time leader in career points (2,235), rebounds (754), and steals (577). On her way to stardom at Pepperdine, she had four CIF titles making her the winningest basketball player, men or women, in Yosemite history.
Women’s totals: Blue (55) Stearns Lassos-18; Eggleston-18; Ritchie-10; Dierberger-9. White (51)
Menton-24; Walsh-11; Mumm-11; Blate Hacker-5.
Turnout was a bit lower for the men. Only six players were able to make it so men and women combined to form teams. The Blue team players: Tim Beauregard (’00), Luke Blate (’13), Ty Grant (13), Blate Hacker, and Menton. The White team players: Dillon Moran (’13), Justin Smith (’07), Bradly Wilkinson (’07), Stearns Lassos, Mumm, and Julia Walsh.
The game went down to the wire with Blue taking it 54-53. Luke Blate led all scorers with 22 points. Beauregard, the oldest alum on the floor added 12 points and grabbed a team high 12 rebounds. Menton added 9; Grant 6; and Karras Blate Hacker 3.
For the White squad Moran led all scorers with 19 points. ’07 teammates Smith and Wilkinson had 14 and 13 respectively. Stearns completed the scoring with 7.
