Lady Badgers place fourth at Hoover Tournament

The Yosemite High girls basketball team placed fourth in the 14 team Hoover Holiday Tournament held Dec. 10 - 13, while the JV team finished second in the eight team Madera Tournament.

Gary Blate’s varsity squad opened Hoover Tournament play with a 53-38 win over Lemoore. The Badgers were led in scoring by 6-foot-3 senior center Taylor Burrall with 20 points. Two other seniors, Veronica Miller and Mttaya Brown each had 13 points.

The Badgers then faced Clovis East in the winners bracket, jumping out to a 22-11 first quarter lead. The Badgers were able to maintain the lead, finishing with a 55-43 victory.

It was Miller and Burrall leading the way with 17 and 16 points respectively with junior point guard Allie Stearns adding 10.

In the semi-finals, Yosemite faced a confident Bullard team featuring two six foot plus players. Yosemite was behind by just a point at half-time but fell behind 37-29 at the end of the third quarter. The Badgers mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, falling just two points shot at the final buzzer, 45-43. Burrall, Stearns and Ashlee Harrell each had 10 points.

In the team’s third place game, the Badgers faced league rival Sierra. It was a close game tied 21-21 at half-time and 41-41 at the end of regulation play, forcing overtime.

The Chieftains scored seven points in the extra period while Yosemite could manage only four after Burrall and Stearns fouled out. Stearns finished the game with 18 points, Burrall 12 and Miller 10.

According to Blate, his varsity team is still a work in progress but is getting better as the season progresses. All five starters have scored in double figures and the defense has become tougher as Burrall is one of the section leaders in blocked shots.

“We have been plagued by bad passing and missed free throws but the players are working hard to correct these problems,” Blate said.

After playing at Buchanan High this Friday, the varsity heads to San Diego for a Holiday Tournament in a 16 team bracket. Schedules and stats can be viewed on the Yosemite Badger girls basketball site on Maxpreps.com.

Baldwin scores 60 in three games for JV team

The Badger JV team was lead by sophomores Carly Baldwin and Katie Long in going 2-1 at the Madera Tournament. In the first game, a 37-31 win oven Fresno, Baldwin scored 19 and Long had 14.

The next game was a 40-25 victory over Madera South with the tandem scoring 17 and 16 respectively .

In the finals against Madera, Baldwin lit the scoreboard with 24 points with Long adding eight, but it was not enough for the Badgers to claim the championship.

Both teams travel to Buchanan on Friday with the JV game at 4:30 p.m., and the varsity game at 6.
