Yosemite hosts eight-team basketball scrimmage

Yosemite High School hosted seven other girls basketball teams to its campus Nov. 29 for to kick-off the season under ‘scrimmage’ conditions, in preparation for the 2014-15 season..

Varsity teams from Chowchilla, Clovis, Selma, McLane, McFarland, Minarets and Mariposa competed in rotation from noon to 3:30 p.m., after the school’s JV teams scrimmaged in the morning.

No score is kept in scrimmages and the 10 quarters of play created plenty of opportunities for coaches to evaluate their entire player roster. The Varsity scrimmage culminated in a two-player team three-point shooting contest and a surprising Yosemite entry of post players Taylor Burrall and Kristin Bonillas prevailed through the three rounds of play to win the championship.

All players from all teams also competed in a free throw knockout contest won by a Chowchilla player.

The Yosemite Badgers looked to be effective in passing the ball under the basket to 6-foot-3 Burrall who is much improved from last year in her first season of playing competitive basketball. Forward Veronica Miller and guard Allie Stearns showed they have outside range and Mattaya Brown, Jessica Fine and Jessica Rudd had a good day driving defenses and attacking the basket.

The scrimmage was attended by community college coaches and an apparel vendor.

The Badgers opened at home Tuesday against Clovis and then go on the road to Elk Grove High School (Sacramento) for a tournament with a 7 p.m. first round match tonight (Thursday) against Pleasant Grove, a top 10 ranked team in the San Joaquin section last season with 25 wins and returning their top scorer.

The Badgers travel to Hoover High School in Fresno for a tournament Dec. 10 - 13.

Minarets will play in the Fowler Tournament Dec. 4 - 6, and will host Orosi at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8, and Orange Cove at 5 p.m. on Dec. 11.
