The Yosemite High varsity girls basketball team breezed through the first round of North Sequoia League play in search of the program’s 14th championship in coach Gary Blate’s 17 seasons.
The Badgers (20-4, 5-0) averaged 66 points per game in the first round of league while holding NSL opponents to 36.6.
Last week, the Badgers () beat Chowchilla 64-40 and Kerman .
At Chowchilla on Jan. 16, senior Sophie McGoldrick was 8 of 8 shooting (including one 3-pointer) for a team-high 17 points. Lilly Graffigna added 15, Jenna Kurz 10, Grace Fries 9, Hailey Rich 6, Courtney Hart 5 and Linnea Leinau 2. McGoldrick also had a team-high 12 rebounds and three assists.
The Badgers won 64-39 at Kerman on Jan. 18. Fries led the way with 20 points, 18 on six 3-pointers. McGoldrick added 15, Hart 12, Rich 10, Kurz 3 and Graffigna and Leinau 2 apiece. Hart had a team-high nine rebounds and Graffigna had 12 assists.
According to the most recent MaxPreps rankings from last week, the Badgers were No. 2in Central Section Division II behind Bakersfield. The playoffs begin Feb. 12.
YHS was scheduled to play Sierra at home on Wednesday (5 p.m. JV, 6:30 varsity) and Liberty (JV 4:30 p.m., varsity 7:30) as part of an NSL Friday quadruple-header.
