Registration is open for the 24th annual free Youth Fishing Derby at Shaver Lake to be held Saturday, June 9.
Kids ages 3 to 15 have a chance to win prizes donated by local merchants. Prize categories include first fish, last fish, smallest fish, largest limit, largest fish and youngest angler. There is also a casting contest for three age groups: 3-7, 8-11 and 12-15. Other activities will be held, organizers say.
All kids will be entered in the free derby raffle which includes a family fishing trip on Shaver Lake, a half-day pontoon boat rental, fishing tackle, sports equipment, clothing, gift certificates and more.
To register, go online to sierratrophytrout.org/derby or on the day of the event stop at the Southern California Edison Day Use Area on Road #2 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The day use area can be reached through the county/public boat launch facilities at the north end of the lake.
Derby hours are from 8 a.m. until noon with awards and the raffle to follow. The casting contest runs 8-11 a.m.
The U.S. Forest Service, Educational Employees Credit Union, Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project and Edison Company are sponsors.
