The Yosemite High boys golf team finished third Monday in the Central Section Division II championships at Madera Golf & Country Club.
Michael Stieler led the way for the seven-time-defending North Sequoia League champions with a 6-over-par 77, advancing to the Southern California regional.
Badgers golf coach Reg Turner said Stieler three-putted the last two holes of his round and then had to sweat out the next hour to see if he qualified. He tied with four other players and only three would be allowed to go. They had a card-off of the back nine and Stieler shot 38 to make the top 10 individuals who advanced to the regionals on May 24 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.
Last week Stieler came in fifth in the North Area Championship shooting a 73 at Riverside Golf Course. The previous week he shot 73 at Madera Muni to win the North Sequoia League championship and MVP.
Other scorers for Yosemite on Monday at the section tournament were Dylan Allen (83), Ryan Lopez (90), Koa Estela (91) and Josh Barba (93). Jack Thearle shot a 101 that didn't count toward the top-five-players team score.
The Badgers' 434 total put them behind champion El Diamante (409) and Bakersfield Christian (430) but ahead of Porterville (459).
Play was from the white tees, making for a relatively short but tricky 6,399-yard course. Par was 71 after one par-5 hole was changed to par-4. And players were often making shots they weren't used to owing to the shorter layout.
