J. Gordon Garrett died March 29, 2016 at the age of 102. He was born Feb. 17, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Penn.
At 20, he signed a three-year contract with the Civilian Conservation Corps., working for the Department of the Interior building state parks, trails, campgrounds, and fighting fires.
When his contract ended in July 1937, he worked some odd jobs before beginning work with the U.S. Forestry Service in 1938. Mr. Garrett has worked throughout many California forests, spending the last 11 of his career at Sierra National Forest Bass Lake.
A Mountain Area resident for 50 years, he enjoyed camping, fishing, and backpacking.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie, and is survived by his daughter, Catherine O’Brien; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., April 8, at Oakhill Cemetery.
