John Peto died April 5, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born Jan. 9, 1922 in Bedford, Ohio to parents George and Barbara Peto.
Mr. Peto served in WWII, settling in California after the war. He retired from ITT Federal Electric at Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1987 after 27 years working as a quality assurance engineering manager. He and his wife lived in Oakhurst for 25 years after moving here from Lompoc.
His passions included photography, and he took advantage of the many opportunities Yosemite offered. He was a member of the Yosemite Western Artists Association and the National Stereoscopic Association. He loved donating his photographs to various organizations for fundraising efforts, and the proceeds of any sales went directly to the Vision Academy of the Arts scholarships.
Mr. Peto is survived by his wife, Tara Ryan; his sister, Eleanor Schoeffler of Florida; his son, Chip and wife Corrine; daughter Megan Peto; grandson, Spencer Peto, and stepson, Don Busse.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., April 18, at the Oakhurst Lutheran Church. Remembrances in his name can be made to the Vision Academy of the Arts.
