William “Bill” R. Whitla died April 7, 2015 at the age of 79. He was born Jan. 10, 1936, in New Brighton, Penn., where he lived for 18 years before relocating to California. He held several jobs over the years including AAA baseball player, airplane flight controller, owner of Bill’s Hitching Post Restaurant and Saloon in Ahwahnee, and owner of a La Palma shopping center.
Mr. Whitla was preceded in death by his former wife, Barbara, his mother, Evelyn, and son William. He is survived by his wife, Janet of Hornitos; son, Billy, grandson Chaz; daughter, Brenda Pinto and Clyde, granddaughter, Carmen; stepchildren, Abel (Kristyen) Lopez and children, Jeff (Amen-Marie Fuller Hernandez) and children of Santa Clarita, and his cousin Getchen Guy Ott.
A viewing will be held 4-7 p.m., April 16, at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., April 17, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mariposa, with a graveside service to follow.
