Sheila “Babs” Carmen died March 20, 2015 at the age of 78 in her North Fork home. She was born Dec. 13, 1936 in Oklahoma City to Inez and Kenneth Sutherlin.
Mrs. Carmen worked in Chowchilla for Quality Liquor, earning her cosmetology certification. She was an avid reader and lifelong learner, who actively pursued her interests in collecting antiques, hunting, country music, gold prospecting, and German Shepherds. She also embraced her husband’s Mono Indian heritage, practicing basket-making skills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Red, her daughter, Linda, and grandsons, Ryan and Justin.
Mrs. Carmen is survived by her sons Philip (Rusty) of North Fork, and Richard of Fresno, and daughter Denise Van Curen of Fresno; sister, Anita Puig De Vall of Novato; and grandchildren Phoenix and Kaelum.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., April 8, at the North Fork Cemetery. A memorial and potluck will follow at the Mono Rancheria Community Center.
