Marin George Baiz died Jan. 23, 2015 at the age of 72. He was born on Feb. 22, 1942 in Oakland, moving with his family to the San Joaquin Valley as a young boy.
Mr. Baiz graduated from Selma High School in 1961, and went on to study aviation engineering at Reedley College, where he earned an associate of science degree. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1964, serving as a medevac helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of captain, earning a Silver Star for extraordinary courage and skill under enemy fire.
After his military service, Mr. Baiz worked as a pilot for Air America, working out of Laos for more than three years. Upon his return home, he purchased farmland in the Selma area, where he produced raisins. Following his retirement, he continued to plant and landscape as a hobby around his home in North Fork. He also enjoyed travel, people, animals, nature and books.
He is survived by his wife Merry Gale; sisters Francis Bailey and Lorraine Baiz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
