Casey Hugh McCartin died Nov. 30, 2014 at the age of 56.
Mr. McCartin grew up in Orange County spending eight years in Costa Mesa, then moved to San Juan Capistrano where he raised an assortment of lethal and exotic pets. Later, he moved to Dana Point, graduating from Dana Point High School in 1976, and later graduating from the University of Santa Barbara. For two summers during college, Mr. McCartin worked on the dock at the Fork’s Resort, pumping gas, renting boats and fishing when business was slow.
After his father purchased a cabin at Bass Lake, Mr. McCartin and his three brothers would often make a five-hour drive from Orange County to visit the mountain areas where he enjoyed hiking, swimming, water skiing, snow skiing and fishing.
After college, Mr. McCartin moved to Poipu, Kauai where he continued his love for fishing.
After 10 years on the island, Mr. McCartin returned to the mainland and got his teaching credential, earning his masters in education from Pepperdine University. For the past 20 years, Mr. McCartin taught second and third grade at Jefferson Elementary in Santa Ana, and during the 2013-14 school year, he received a Congressional recognition as Teacher of the Year.
Mr. McCartin was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Ruth; his aunt, Isabel Board; uncles, Bob Huxtable and Bill Board, and cousin John Carasik.
He is survived by his wife, Geri; stepmother, Karen; brothers, Mike, Mark, and Duff; two aunts; one uncle; two stepsisters; two sister-in-laws; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
