Margaret Perrill Hume, known to most as “Penny,” was born on December 2,1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and passed away on January 2, 2018, at her home in Coarsegold, California.
She was predeceased by her parents Commander Harlan Knox Perrill and Virginia Lewis Perrill, her son David Hume and her son-in-law, Michael Rak. Her early childhood was spent at various naval bases and naval air stations from Philadelphia to Florida to San Diego, California.
After her father retired from the Navy, the family relocated to the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, California, where she attended University High School graduating as valedictorian and first in her class. Thereafter, she attended UCLA and was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Upon graduation, she married Richard Hume who was just commencing his legal practice in Los Angeles. She soon adopted Richard’s then three-year old daughter, Virginia. She and Richard later had four more children, David, who died in infancy, Christopher, Hilary and Blakely.
Her marriage to Richard ended in divorce in 1976. Then in 1980, she met James H. “Jim” Watkins, whom she married in 1986. Penny and Jim along with the youngest child, Blakely, moved to Coarsegold, Calif., where Jim opened a branch office in Oakhurst. Penny and Jim very quickly became involved in the community and its activities. Penny was a member of the Soroptimists International of the Sierra and the Xi Chi Beta Sorority, holding offices in both organizations.
In addition, she served as Office Manager of her husband’s law practice, managed her real estate practice and served on various community advisory committees while the youngest child, Blakely, was in school at Oakhurst Intermediate and Yosemite High School.
Penny is survived by her husband, Jim Watkins, her four children Virginia Hume of Grants Pass, OR, Christopher Hume and wife, Dawn, of Las Vegas, NV ,Hilary Rak of Oakhurst, CA and Blakely Hume and wife ,Justine, of Reno, NV ,as well as her two step-children, Danielle Korban of Phoenix, AZ and James H. Watkins, III, of Las Vegas, NV . She is also survived by her sister, Judy and husband, Jack Houlgate; and grandchildren, Michael Rak, Zoe Korban, Everett Hume, Devon Hume, Logan Hume, Quincy Hume and Shaw Hume; and many beloved nephews and nieces.
