Coarsegold student wins Law Day contest

Hannah Beaumont of Coarsegold Elementary School won first place in the sixth annual Law Day Yosemite essay contest that saw more than 300 entries from area eighth-graders. Second place went to Colton Franklin from Oak Creek Elementary and third place went to Lupin Amstutz from Yosemite Valley Elementary.

Law Day was May 4 at Half Dome Village in Yosemite Valley. The theme for this year’s event was “Equal Justice for All.” The keynote speaker was Laurie Levinson, who heads up the Innocence Project. The event was also a celebration of the 150th anniversary of ratification of the 14th Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause. And the essay contest theme was Equal Justice for All as it pertains to the Gideon v. Wainwright case.
