Two area residents arrested after high-speed chase

On Sunday, July 12, Mariposa County deputies apprehended two Eastern Madera County residents following a high speed chase in Mariposa.

According to Mariposa sheriff deputies, William Shannon Reed of Oakhurst, and passenger William Melvin Hand of Ahwahnee, were spotted driving a vehicle with no front license plate, and were not wearing seatbelts.

When the deputy tried to pull the car over, Reed sped away at a speed estimated to be 65 mph.

Dust made it difficult to follow the pair, and when the dust settled, it was reported that Reed tried to ram the patrol car more than once, traveling at high rates of speed on Boyer, Italian Creek and Manzanita roads. With the assistance of a resident, who gave the deputy directions to go down a side road on his property, the deputy found the vehicle unoccupied after hitting a rock pile. Both men had fled on foot, but were later caught.

It was reported that Reed had fled because there was a warrant for his arrest, and Hand admitted that he had smoked “a bowl” of methamphetamine about an hour prior to the car chase.

Both men were booked into Mariposa County jail. Charges included evading, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and resisting an officer.
