School board filing deadline
The deadline for potential candidates to file for school board races across Madera County is Aug. 12, and, unless new candidates enter the race, eight total spots in the Yosemite Unified, Bass Lake Joint Union, Chawanakee Unified, and Raymond-Knowles Union school districts will remain held by incumbents.
To file, potential candidates must obtain and fill out necessary paperwork at the Madera County Government Center, 200 W. 4th Street in Madera, and submit it no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 12. There is no filing fee or signature requirement to run for a school board seat.
The North Fork and Oakhurst Head Start preschool programs for children 3-4 years of age, are accepting applications for the 2016-2017 school year.
School will begin on Aug. 17, so call now to schedule an appointment to apply. For the 2016-17 program year, your child must turn 3-years-old by Sept. 1. You will need to provide the following documents: your child’s birth certificate, immunization records (must be up-to- date), Medi-Cal or other insurance card, and family income verification for 12 months (tax return, W-2’s, Passport to Services, Social Security, TANF, etc.). Income eligibility is based on the 2016 Federal Poverty Guidelines.
A Keep our Mountains Beautiful meeting will be held 6:30 p.m., Aug. 18, at Round Table Pizza in Oakhurst. Topics on the agenda include future roadside litter cleanups and advocacy projects. Come early if ordering food. Members and public are welcome.

A Friends of the Oakhurt Branch Library collectible book sale will take place 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Aug. 20, in the library’s community room. Prices are $2 and up, $1 for children’s books. Proceeds benefit the library.
Models are being sought for a Frugal Friends Fashion Show, sponsored by the Friends of the North Fork Branch Library, will be held from noon to 3 p.m., Aug. 20 at Bandit Town in North Fork.
Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door. This covers lunch, recycled jewelry sale, silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are sold at the North Library Library, Hardware Store and Visitor Center.

Dollar General was to meet before the Planning Commission Aug. 2, but because there were only three commissioners present who could review the Coarsegold project, Dollar General requested a continuance. No new date has been set.
