Local author reads at Oakhurst Library

Local author Karen Bennett will read from her new children’s book, “A Snail Tale,” Wednesday, Jan. 2 in the Sue Rhu children’s room at the Oakhurst Library. The event runs 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

According to a release from the library, Bennett said her new children’s book is based on a true adventure with snails that occurred about 25 years ago in Fortuna.

Bennett’s resume also includes music teacher, professional artist and published poet.

January HOW Dinner

January’s Helping One Woman dinner will take place in Oakhurst on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Plazuelas Mexican Restaurant, 40015 Highway 49, with the proceeds going to Tina Sexton.

Sexton is the general manager of the Taco Bell in Oakhurst and has been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis with autoantibodies to muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK). The rare illness rapidly attacks the respiratory system and has forced Sexton into six visits to the intensive care unit, seven surgeries, chemotherapy and more extensive treatment.

Two of her six children have worked to raise awareness of the disease and raise money for their mother.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m. and will feature silent auctions and prize drawings, with all proceeds going to Wynn at the end of the night.

Donations in the form of checks, cash or gift items for the dinner can be dropped off at Tokens, 40410 Highway 41, in Oakhurst Monday through Saturday. Gift items can also be dropped off Tuesday through Saturday at Mint Condition, 40315 Junction Dr., in Oakhurst.

Oakhurst Democratic Club

The Oakhurst Democratic Club will next meet Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Oakhurst Grill, 40530 Highway 41. The featured speaker will be Dr Andrew Fiala, Director of the Ethics Center at Fresno State University and columnist for the Fresno Bee.
