New Sierra Tel phone book says ‘Thank you’ after challenging fire season

Sierra Tel, which serves both Madera and Mariposa Counties, unveiled its 2019 telephone directory on Dec. 18 and its cover pays tribute to the first responders that served tirelessly in a year plagued by wildfire.

The cover honoring emergency responders was unveiled during brief ceremonies at both the Mariposa County Courthouse and at the Sierra Tel headquarters in Oakhurst in the company of many first responders from our communities.

Adorning the front cover are three first responder silhouettes with an American flag backdrop. Below that, it reads:“First responders, thank you for your service.”

The back cover features a more detailed message of gratitude.

“Sierra Tel extends our utmost gratitude to these first responders, who have made a sacrifice in so many lives. We recognize your bravery, skill and passion - and we want to ensure that your sacrifices do not go unnoticed,” it reads.

In a news release, Sierra Tel stated it felt such a cover was necessary due to the recent fires and loss in the community.

The Ferguson Fire burned nearly 100,000 acres in Mariposa County and killed two firefighters over the course of its month-long lifespan this summer. It forced the longest closure in the history of Yosemite National Park and damaged many small businesses in eastern Madera and Mariposa Counties.

The new directory includes business and residential phone numbers for Oakhurst, Ahwahnee, Bass Lake, Fish Camp, Yosemite, Coarsegold, Raymond, North Fork, Mariposa, Catheys Valley, Coulterville, Hornitos, Mt. Bullion and Midpines.

Over 20,000 copies of the directory will be distributed through mail starting approximately January 2 and additional copies will be available at Sierra Tel offices in mid-February.
