December Conservative Forum

The December meeting for the Mountain Area Conservative Forum will also feature a movie and will take place at the Oakhurst Grill, 40530 Highway 41, on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

“Death of a Nation,” directed by Dinesh D’Souza, is the movie slated to be shown. The film is an “examination of fascism, white supremacy, progressivism, and hidden history,” according to a news release.

The event will run from 6:30-9 p.m.

iPhone workshop

The Oakhurst Branch Library, 49044 Civic Cir., is hosting a workshop on Saturday, Dec. 15 for those needing help navigating their iPhones.

Robert Sumner, an outreach specialist for the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program of the California Telephone Access Program, will lead the workshop.

The workshop will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Sumner will focus on adjusting the volume, sending text messages, utilizing bluetooth capabilities and using other basic functions of an iPhone. The course will also cater to those who have trouble seeing or hearing when using their iPhone.

Attendees must bring their own phones to the workshop.

Space in the class is limited and reservations are required. You can reserve a spot in the workshop by calling the library at 559-683-4838.

Yosemite Area Audubon Society events

The Yosemite Area Audubon Society is hosting its ”Know Your Local Birds” program on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Mariposa United Methodist Church, 4991 6th Street.

The program begins at 7 p.m.

Local photographer and ornithologist Matthew Matthiessen of Mariposa will be helping local residents become familiar with our local birds and how to identify the more challenging ones.

December also means the start to the 119th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC), an international bird counting event with three of the counts taking place in the mountain community:

  • Mariposa: Dec. 15. Contact Len McKenzie at 209-769-0566 or lenmckenzie@yahoo.com for more information and to get instructions and assignments to specific zones within the Mariposa count circle.
  • Yosemite: Dec. 16. Prospective counters should contact Sarah Stock, sarah_stock@nps.gov, to register and receive zone assignments for the Yosemite count.
  • Oakhurst: Jan. 5, 2019. Participants should meet at the Burger King in Oakhurst at 7 a.m. that day for instructions and zone assignments. Call 559-760-6327 or email Vernon Johnson at roygbiv@nctv.com for more information.
