One of the bigger events of the year, The Elegant Auction, with a 150 great silent and live auction items up for bid for the benefit of the Oakhurst Community Park, gets underway at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Golden Chain Theatre.
The them for the 33rd edition of the event is Great Gatsby/Roaring 20s, and Oakhurst Community Park Committee Chairman Andrew Pence encourages attendees to dress to impress.
Since day one, the Oakhurst Community Park, in the heart of Oakhurst behind the library, has not received a single cent of county or state funds, with the Elegant Auction serving as the sole funding source for all maintenance, equipment and improvements for the park that is on a long-term minimal lease from Sierra Telephone.
“The park has been alive and well since the beginning due to the generosity of all the donated auction prizes by businesses and individuals in our community,” Pence said. “From new playground equipment to covered patios, Oakhurst Community Park continues to delight both residents of the Mountain Area and visitors alike.”
Pence remembers as a youngster his mother, Mary Pence, working hard as one of the founding members of the Elegant Auction.
“She said they used to have it at the Golden Chain in the beginning, so I and the auction committee thought it would be fun to help GCT celebrate their 50th Anniversary with this great event,” Pence said.
“We thought the Golden Chain Theatre was the perfect venue to create a fun roaring 20s speakeasy vibe,” Pence said.
“The Elegant Auction committee is excited to show the community how our partnership this year with Golden Chain Theater can benefit both great causes,” said Christy Smith, live auction chair. “ GCT is receiving some much needed repairs and upgrades that should surprise our guests. The community support that came together to make this happen has been amazing. The partnership is helping the Elegant Auction too because we’ve been able to coordinate around the “Gatsby” production that opens at GCT just a week later. GCT is providing beautiful stage props and people to be at our event in costume and character to make it a really fun event.”
The Yosemite Jazz Band will be performing era classics complete with sultry singer Jennifer Janine throughout the evening.
There will be at least six vacation packages in the live auction including a week’s stay in a private homer right on the beach on the Kona Coast in Hawaii with the use of a car, seven days in Cabo San Lucas at the Purblo Bonito Sunset Golf and Spa Resort, and a four-night Carnival Cruise to Catalina and Ensenda.
“Treat yourself or someone you love with beautiful diamond earrings, a summer patio package, a NASCAR experience, game room package, artwork, a kayak and much more,” enticed Smith.
“Delicious gourmet hors d’ oeuvres will be catered by Wild Fig Kitchen in Coarsegold and specialty themed cocktails will be available for purchase as well as complimentary champagne,” said committee member Gina Mims.
The silent auction begins at 5 p.m. and the live auction starts at 8.
For those wanting to stay in town there are hotel discounts at Best Western, Yosemite Southgate Hotel and Hounds Tooth Inn for those attending the event. A shuttle bus, provided by Discover Yosemite, will transport guests to and from the event throughout the night. When booking a reservation mention “Elegant Auction” for special rates.
