Branches Books & Gifts, Oakhurst’s lone bookstore, is for sale.
Owner Anne Driscoll opened her independently owned bookstore in 2013, but said recent changes in her family’s life led her to put the store up for sale late last month.
“My husband has been promoted in Fresno, and my daughter has been looking at some options down in Fresno for college,” she said. “It just seems like for so long everything was happening up here, and now it’s starting to shift where things are headed for us.”
Driscoll emphasized that the store would remain open during this time of transition and her focus was finding a new owner to keep the store going. All events will continue as planned, including a “Superhero Invasion Day” on April 27 and a sixth anniversary celebration in June.
Driscoll said this was a very difficult decision for her, calling the store her “baby,” and said she will work hard to make sure the store is left in the hands of the right person. As of Monday afternoon, Driscoll said there have already been 15 serious inquiries from potential buyers. Three of those inquiries resulted in a face-to-face meeting.
Driscoll expressed her gratitude for her time as owner.
“The bookstore has been such an amazing place to be a part of,” she said. “Watching small toddlers become readers, and young children graduate to the young adult, fiction and non-fiction sections has been an incredible experience.”
The owner said that although the plan is to keep the store open, that plan will be reevaluated if she cannot find a buyer by the time her lease expires in about a year and half. Driscoll said she doubts it will come to that.
