Oakhurst man sentenced for assaulting deputy

An Oakhurst man was sentenced to nearly 18 years in prison late last month for assaulting a Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputy in July last year.

William Reed, 47, was convicted Oct. 15, 2015 for attacking deputy William Atkinson July 12, 2015.

The Mariposa Gazette reported according to court records, on that day, Atkinson observed a vehicle that lacked a license plate on Highway 49 near Darrah Road, and attempted to pull over its two occupants, who weren’t wearing seatbelts.

The car fled, court records indicate, but Atkinson was later able to find it. At that point, the vehicle slammed into his patrol car, accounting for the assault charges.

Court records show Reed had a prior violent felony conviction, and was sentenced to 17 1/2 years by Mariposa judge Michael Fagalde for two counts of felony assault, one county of felony fleeing a scene, and two misdemeanors.
