The United States Academic Decathlon has announced the 2016-2017 Academic Decathlon theme is World War II. This year’s Super Quiz topic will include questions based on six subject areas including art, economics, literature, music, science and social science.
The Madera County Academic Decathlon will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 with the essay and interview competitions held on Friday, Jan. 27.
The eight high schools expected to participate are: Chawanakee Academy, Chowchilla High, Liberty High, Madera High, Madera South High, Minarets Charter High, Minarets High and Yosemite High Schools. Team members will be announced in December.
This will be Minarets and Minarets Charter High Schools’ first year participating.
Mariposa County High School will be joining the competition again this year representing Mariposa County in the competition.
Teams have already received study materials in the subject areas of art, economics, essay, language and literature, math, music, science, and social science.
Students will also participate in speech and interview events. As part of the literature test, participants will read the book Transit by Anna Seghers.
Teams will be comprised of up to 25 students and awards will be handed out based on divisions (Honor, Scholastic, and Varsity).
This will be Madera County’s 35th year participating in the Academic Decathlon hosted by Madera County Office of Education and Madera County Schools Foundation.
