Soroptimist will honor 10 women April 21

Soroptimist International of the Sierras will be honoring Leah Shelton, Kristina Tallent, and Heather Todd at the club’s “Make A Difference for Women” awards luncheon, noon, April 21, at the Yosemite Gateway Inn Restaurant.

The awards are given to women who are striving to obtain skills and education to improve their employment status and standard of living for herself and her family. Three women were chosen to receive “Live Your Dream” scholarship awards, given to a woman striving to obtain skills and education to improve the lives of herself and her family.

This year’s recipients are Leah Shelton, Kristina Tallent, and Heather Todd.

Each will receive a cash award of $1,000 plus a $100 gift card to use for gasoline for travel. The cash awards come from Soroptimist fundraising programs that are held throughout the year.

In addition, three “Women of Distinction” awards will be presented at the luncheon. This award honors a woman who has worked to improve the lives of woman and girls throughout her professional and/or volunteer work.

This year’s recipients are Laura Norman (Sierra Telephone - Business Development Department - public relations supervisor), Vicki Burkhalter (La Sierra Guild, Kiwanis Club), and Fern Facchino (Oakhurst Sierra Rotary Club, Ahwahnee Hills Regional Park).

Four women were selected to be honored for the Soroptimist “Women Helping Women” award for their outstanding contribution to the women in the community.

The four women are Sara Wolters (H.O.W. - Helping One Woman - Realty Concepts office manager), Nancy Fikkert (H.O.W., owner of Token Thrift Store), Kristen Ambrose (H.O.W.), and Tamara Tacket Dent, piano/voice teacher, lactation educator.
