A 48-year-old deceased woman found Saturday evening partially submerged in a small stream that feeds Bass Lake has been identified as Viola Gillespie of Oakhurst.
Madera County sheriff deputies responded to Bass Lake Saturday about 5 p.m., after being notified a body had been discovered in the water near the end of the old Ducey’s boat dock.
“The investigation into the circumstances leading up to her death will continue and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death,” said Sheriff Jay Varney.
Initial findings revealed no signs of foul play.
Information gathered by sheriff’s detectives indicates that Gillespie would often go for walks in this area of the lake; however, detectives are still trying to determine all events leading up to her becoming immersed in the shallow stream.
