A white adult male in a black long-sleeved shirt and white pants remains a suspect at large after allegedly leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase through Coarsegold in a stolen vehicle.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, officers received reports of a 1994 white Jeep Cherokee stolen from the area of Yosemite Southgate Hotel and Suites in Oakhurst, public information officer Kaci Lutz said.
A CHP officer in the area of Highway 41 and Van Teri Road, south of Road 415, spotted the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, then followed to pull the driver over for a traffic stop.
“After beginning the stop, the driver then began to speed away at high speeds,” Lutz said. “The pursuit was on.”
The officer pursued the Jeep to the area of Hopi Avenue and Apache Road in Indian Lakes, east of Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino. As the vehicle began to slow, the male suspect then jumped from the driver-side door and ran in the northeast direction, Lutz said.
“The Jeep was not placed in park, and at the time the driver jumped out, the jeep continued and collided into an oak tree,” Lutz said. “Nobody else was inside.”
Madera County Sheriff’s deputies were called in to assist in a search of the area, as well as K-9 units and air support from a CHP helicopter and airplane, but the suspect was not found.
Lutz said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is again urged to call the CHP office at (559) 658-6590.
Debbie Mackey, in a post on social media, said it was her son’s Jeep that was stolen and they were glad the vehicle was returned with little damage.
