Fatality in Coarsegold crash

A Fresno man driving a truck full of Rockstar energy drinks was killed Monday afternoon when his vehicle veered off of Highway 41 south of Road 416 near Chukchansi casino and rolled down an embankment on the highway’s west side.

California Highway Patrol officials said they won’t provide the 40-year-old driver’s name until his family is notified. The wreck was reported around 1 p.m. after the driver, traveling southbound on the highway in a 2011 Kenworth commercial truck, careened off the road.

A person who lives near where the crash took place, who asked to remain anonymous, said he didn’t see the wreck but heard it.

“It sounded like really bad thunder,” the man said. “It was scary to hear.”

The man said other witnesses told him the driver was ejected from the truck as it tumbled end-over-end for a few hundred feet.

People attempted CPR on the man, the witness said.

Coworkers of the driver expressed grief on social media after hearing the news, and asked everyone to pray for his family.

“I can’t believe it,” Brandon Hirsch said. “Just talked to him this morning. That was my old route and I trained him for that route. It’s sad. But please keep his wife and kids in your prayers.”

Reasons for the wreck are unknown as officers from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol continue investigations.

Highway 41 remained open but drivers were asked to remain cautious as they passed through the area.
