Oakhurst man arrested for allegedly stealing Cal Trans backhoe

A 43-year-old Hispanic man from Oakhurst was arrested this week for the alleged theft of Cal Trans equipment.

The California Highway Patrol said Christopher Allen Cervantes was stopped on Highway 41, south of Victoria Lane, at 8:26 p.m., Oct. 15, after an anonymous tip regarding a person driving a tractor from a Cal Trans work site.

CHP officers found Cervantes driving a yellow 2010 John Deer 310 backhoe down a dirt driveway, and contacted a Cal Trans supervisor, who confirmed the suspect did not have permission to drive the vehicle.

Cervantes was taken into custody for the unlawful taking or driving of a vehicle, and was booked into Madera County Jail on $25,000 bail.
