John Pool, 68, a Mariposa resident, sustained fatal injuries following a solo-vehicle accident on Aug. 20. According to the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Pool was heading westbound on Harris Road, west of Highway 49, in his 1986 Volkswagen Microbus. Harris Road is about 10 miles east of Mariposa.
While attempting a curve, his vehicle went off the roadway and down a steep embankment. The vehicle then overturned onto its roof, catching fire. Mariposa County fire and Cal Fire responded to the scene, containing the three-to-five-acre wildfire caused by this incident.
Pool was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
In a separate incident, on Sunday, Aug. 23, a Mariposa man was arrested for allegedly killing a bicyclist while driving drunk, authorities said.
According to the CHP, Ruport Wayne Harrison, 72, was driving north on Highway 49 near French Camp Road Sunday when he allegedly slammed into a man from Merced riding a bicycle on the highway.
Harrison then fled from the scene, CHP officials said, and was later found at his home on Bear Valley Road. Harrison was booked into Mariposa County Jail on DUI, hit and run, and manslaughter charges. The name of the 63-year-old victim was not released.
