Mark Evan Smith joins Sierra Star staff

Mark Evan Smith, a 27-year-old journalist with experience covering the Valley floor and Mountain Area of the county, has joined the Sierra Star.

Smith graduated from California State University, Fresno, as its Outstanding Print Journalist of 2013, and spent three years with the Madera Tribune, the first while he completed a full-time college schedule.

Smith said he’s excited to cover Eastern Madera County, and help ensure its residents continue to receive a wide variety of informative and entertaining stories on the people, businesses, and issues that impact the Mountain Area.

“I’ve always loved the mountains and Yosemite,” said Smith, who grew up in a small neighborhood near Avenue 15 and Highway 41 in the Valley. “This is a fantastic community, and I’m going to love working with its people and its businesses.”

At the Madera Tribune, Smith reported on everything from heated county political campaigns to the trials of convicted Madera murderers Brittany Navarra and Dustin Gran, who planned, and killed Navarra’s 18-year-old romantic rival.
