A Haven of Rest recognized for excellence

Yosemite’s A Haven of Rest Bed & Breakfast recently won TripAdvisor’s 2015 Certification of Excellence, based on consistently great reviews from travelers.

The B&B, run by Mike and Jody Telegan, has been in business since May 2006. With just one two-room suite, complete with private bath and private entrance, this destination starts getting busy in March. By the middle of May, guests ask to be placed on the waiting list.

Approximately 70% of their clientele are from other countries.

“Mike has a collection of flags from all the countries we have enjoyed receiving guests from,” Jody explained, “and they say it makes them feel at home when they turn the corner and see their flag flying ... plus it’s a tool that helps them find our address quickly.”

About 13 years ago, the couple got into the hospitality business while living in Mariposa, where they started a B&B for their son. It turned out that they loved the business, and all the interesting people they had an opportunity to meet. Once the property became too much for them to maintain, they relocated to the Oakhurst area, opening Yosemite’s A Haven of Rest Bed & Breakfast.

“Our B&B is unique in that we can guarantee guest privacy, while at the same time delivering quality customer service,” Jody continued. “While service is most important to us, so is striking that perfect balance of not intruding on privacy. Other things that make us stand out is we offer more than just a bedroom ... there’s a private sitting room, a park-like yard with private swim spa ... making it a magical place for honeymooners wanting to be alone or that perfect spot for a young family looking to make special memories.”

The Telegans were both thrilled and astonished to receive this award.

“When the fire marshal came out, he told us that this is how B&Bs got started, with one bedroom, but now they’re more like mini-hotels, where the intimacy is lost,” Jody recalled. “We couldn’t do what we do or be who we are if it weren’t for our guests and their lovely comments.”

“We’re excited about the news,” Mike added. “We’re small, but we make up for it in how we treat our guests.”

The faces of guests Christina and Kenny Wager, Huntington Beach residents, seemed frozen in pure contentment.

It was their first stay at the B&B, and their first visit to the Mountain Area. They came for a friend’s wedding, and planned on staying the next two nights at Wawona.

“It’s just so peaceful, tranquil and quiet here,” Christina said, sipping from a glass goblet filled with orange juice. A small water fountain gurgled rhythmically nearby, and tall pines shaded the large backyard.

“If we had known it was going to be like this,” Kenny added, “we would have stayed here every night.”

“Mike and Jody are just so amazing,” Christina continued. “They remind me of my parents. They’re so warm, so inviting. They have thought of everything down to the smallest detail. It’s truly first-class.”

The young couple teased they weren’t budging - simply kicking-back, and basking in the peace and solitude “until kicked out.”

Telegans’ secret to success? After 13 years in the industry, they have stuck with the same motto since day one: “treat every guest with the same excitement of that first.”
