The South County Colts, a 12-and-under travel baseball team, is competing this weekend in a 40-team tournament in San Diego. In addition to California, tournament teams are from Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, and beyond.
The team is made up of players primarily from the Madera area, with Mike ‘Mikey’ Ward representing Oakhurst on the team.
The team manager is Mike Molina, and coaches are Steve Gallegos, and Pete Ramirez. Last season, the team was ranked high nationally. The team moved to a higher division this season, and are currently ranked No. 6 nationally in its age division.
The team is 67-7 since being formed in 2013.
Ward first tried out and made the team in 2013 with his fielding, pitching and hitting abilities.
Ward plays for his Oakhurst Little League team, the Giants, during the regular Little League season. That team is managed by Bill Ward, with Mark Conti, BJ Stewart, and Jonas Garner coaching.
During the past couple years on the giants team, Ward’s batting average has been .362 and his coaches have trusted him in pinch situations both at the plate and on the mound.
The Colts are 67-7-1 since the past three seasons.
Two 10-year-old softball players from the Yosemite Girl’s Softball League, Emily Warnert and Alexia Wilson, will also be traveling to San Diego this weekend to play in a 27-team (10-and-under) tournament at the Junior Olympics State Softball Championships.
Warnert, a shortstop, and Wilson, a first baseman for the Mountain Thunder, were selected to play on the Liberty Gold (Madera Ranchos) travel team after coach Sean Bowe saw them play in an all-star tournament in Hanford.
The Mountain Thunder team was coached this season by Randy Matyshock and Darin Wilson.
