Melodrama this weekend

Melodrama returns to the Golden Chain Theatre this weekend with “Bertha The Beautiful Typewriter Girl,” playing at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

“The Golden Chain Theatre is excited to be continuing the tradition of a summer melodrama by delivering the upcoming production,” said Director Jennifer Varner. “This is a fun show that is sure to delight all ages. Bring the entire family to this “G” rated show, and enjoy booing at the villain, cheering for the hero, and sighing for the lovely heroine in this fun 1940s style melodrama.”

The production, starring Alli Ruiz, Matt Van De Wolf, and Bill Green, features 1940s songs and dances between acts, and plays weekends through June 28.

Sconce a finalist

MET Hero’s Matt Sconce has been named one of the 15 finalists in Canon’s Project Imagination: The Trailer Contest. Sconce and his wife, Heather, directed a short trailer featuring their two children, and their dog, Sushi, in “The Hunt.”

One winning trailer, selected by Ron Howard and Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, will inspire a short film starring Hutcherson.

Contest officials are encouraging people to participate in voting for the winning trailer at imagination.usa.canon.com.

Oakhurst Talent Show auditions

It’s that time of year for the Oakhurst Talent Show, sponsored by Humana Insurance, to benefit the Oakhurst Senior Center.

Auditions will be held every Sunday, beginning June 7 through the month of August, 1:30-4 p.m., at the Senior Center.

The show will be held Sept. 13, at the Oakhurst Community Center.

Gala for the Arts

The Madera County Arts Council will hold Gala for the Arts, 6-9 p.m., June 25, at the San Joaquin Wine Company, Inc. (21821 Avenue 16, Madera).

Enjoy wine, beer and Hors D’oeuvres. Tickets are $40 per person, and can be purchased online at maderaarts.org, or at Circle Gallery in Madera.

Summer Gospel Sing

Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church offers a Summer Gospel Sing, 7 p.m., June 11. Hosted by Bill and Linda Seaberg, and the Sierra Joy Senior Adults, including pianist Susan Birge, and Kirk Moulin on bass. Dessert will be provided by Sierra Joy.

This is a free event.

Audubon field trip

The Yosemite Area Audubon Society is offering a free field trip in Wawona and Yosemite June 10. Thoise interested should meet at 7:45 a.m. at McDonalds in Oakhurst to carpool.

Attendees should bring binoculars, field guides, lunch, and beverages.

Kid’s carnival

The Hillside Baptist Church in North Fork will hold a carnival 5-7 p.m., June 6, where there will be kid’s worship, Bible story and games.

Honorary Mayor celebrity bartending

To raise funds for the Natural Disaster Relief Fund, honorary mayor candidate, Shirley Bailey, will be the celebrity bartender, 5 - 8 p.m., Sunday, June 7, at Roman’s Bar (Crab Cakes Restaurant).

Fundraisers

Honorary mayor Bob Macaulay, representing the Boys & Girls Club of Oakhurst, will hold a Bingo and Barbecue evening, 3-7 p.m., June 14, at the Senior Center.

There will also be an all you can eat barbecue with live music from Rich Severson’s Guitar College, 5-10 p.m., June 25, at the Queen’s Inn. Cost is $10. There will be three door prizes (a cord of wood, a two night stay in Ventura with restaurant gift cards, and a Christina White photograph).
