Varney honored as Man of Year
Chowchilla police chief and newly elected Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney will be honored as Man of the Year at the 2015 community awards dinner hosted by the Chowchilla District Chamber of Commerce, Saturday Jan. 17 at Farnesi’s Steakhouse (230 E. Robertson Blvd).
Cost is $35 per person. Tickets are available at the Chowchilla chamber office.

After service the community for 14 years, nurse practitioner Sandy Peck has announced her retirement, as of Dec. 30. She worked for Primary Care Consultants for two-and-a-half years, and has worked at Community Medical Providers for 12 years. She has 43 years of experience as a nurse, 17 of those as nurse practitioner.
“It’s been a pleasure to serve the community,” Peck said. “I’ve enjoyed taking care of my patients over the years ... it’s been a very fulfilling career.”
Peck, originally from Witchita, Kansas, is married with two grown children, four stepchildren, and 15 grandchildren. She spends her free time reading and gardening, while she and her husband, Gary, enjoy traveling in their RV.
Manna House benefit
A smoked tri-tip dinner (courtesy of Pastor Bill of Rushing Wind Ministries) and worship night will be held 6-9 p.m., Jan. 9, at the Yosemite New Life Church of the Nazarene, with all proceeds benefiting Manna House. There will be a raffle and door prizes; $5 for six raffle tickets, or $10 for 12. Bring a bag of dry rice, beans or other non-perishables to be entered into a special drawing.
Music will be provided by Surrendered Life Worship, as well as other area worship groups.
Dinner costs $12 for adults; for children 12 years and under, the cost if $12 for two. Tickets can be purchased beforehand at the Yosemite New Life Church, Rushing Wind Ministries and at the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce. They can also be purchased at the door the day of the event. Last year, $4,000 was raised for Manna House.
