Pipe bomb threat temporarily closes Highway 49

Highway 49 between Indian Peak Road and Ashworth was temporarily closed down today following a potential pipe bomb threat.

Around 11 a.m. the Mariposa California Highway Patrol received a call advising officers of a potential pipe bomb discovered along the roadside.

The threat could not be invalidated and the Merced County Bomb Squad was called to the scene. The bomb squad was able to identify the object as a PVC tube with welding rod commonly used by arc welders.

Highway 49 has since been opened to traffic.

In an unrelated incident A suspicious package wrapped in duct tape was found near the Bass Lake Courthouse causing the evacuation and closure of Road 274 near the courthouse.

Traffic was temporarily diverted down North Shore Road (432) and the Merced County Bomb squad was called to the scene.

The road has since been opened to traffic.

To follow up your request for information regarding yesterday’s Bass Lake incident, our Office received a call before noon on Monday, that a suspicious device was found in a trash can outside the Bass Lake Courthouse.
