Yosemite grad awarded Presidential Doctoral Research Fellowship

Kirk Townsend, a 2009 Yosemite High School graduate, has been awarded a four-year Presidential Doctoral Research Fellowship from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. This fall he began his studies there, working towards a doctoral degree in Quaternary Geomorphology.

Townsend graduated Summa Cum Laude in June 2013 from Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo with a bachelor of science degree in Earth Sciences, with concentration in geology. His grade point average at 3.85 was the highest in the Earth Sciences major and he was awarded the Professional of the Year Award by his Cal Poly professors as the top Earth Sciences student.

While at Yosemite High, Townsend was active in the music program including Advanced Percussion, wind ensemble, and jazz band, He was also active in the California Scholarship Federation and was one of the 2009 valedictorians.

Townsend is the son of Larry and Donna Townsend of Oakhurst.
