Military Care Packages

The time is fast approaching for Soroptimist International of The Sierras to send free holiday gift packages to men and women who are in the armed services.

Included in the packages are a Sierra Star newspaper, homemade baked goods, gum, candies, socks, playing cards, and a holiday card from members of Soroptimist International of The Sierras to remind service personnel how much they are appreciated.

A deadline has been set for Dec. 2 for names and addresses to assure the packages arrive in time for Christmas.

Cards for Critters

The EMC SPCA is holding a gift card raffle as a fundraiser to help build the Mountain Area animal shelter. Each ticket is $5, and the drawing will take place Dec. 1. Winners need not be present.

First place consists of 20 $25 gift cards to stores like Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Lowes, and Home Depot; and restaurants like Cheesecake Factor, Mimi’s, Red Robin, Red Lobster and Olive Garden. Second place consists of 10 $25 gift cards to stores and restaurants; third place is a $150 gas card, and fourth place is a $100 gas card.

Tickets are available at the Cats Meow (40315 Junction Drive, Suite C, Oakhurst). All proceeds benefit EMC SPCA Shelter Fund.

Holiday giveaways

Manna House sign-ups for the Thanksgiving giveaway are currently underway. Large roasting chickens, along with items for traditional side dishes, will be handed out until supplies run out during the giveway, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Nov. 23.

Christmas sign-ups will take place Dec. 1-16, with the giveaway, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Dec. 18. The Manna House clothing department will be closed Dec. 14 so that volunteers can help Santa and his elves set up the toys. The clothing department will reopen Jan. 4.

Toys for Tots

The Coarsegold Historic Village will collect toys 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., Dec. 5, for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive. The event is sponsored by the Coarsegold Chamber of Commerce.

All toys, for children up to 16 years of age, should be unwrapped. Realistic-looking toy weapons and gifts with food, if donated, will not be distributed. Recommended items for pre-teens and teens are sporting equipment, toiletries, board games, books, and hand-held electronics.

Toys can be dropped off at other locations throughout the Mountain Area, just look for the Toys for Tots banner.

Outpouring dinner

The annual free Christmas feast - the Outpouring - will be held 3-7 p.m., Dec. 23, at the Oakhurst Community Center. Food teams, volunteers and Santa are needed.

Thanksgiving fundraiser

Hillside Baptist Church will hold a Thanksgiving Dinner Fundraiser, 5:30 p.m., Nov. 19. A pie auction will also be held.

Tickets at the door are $10, and includes turkey dinner, sides, dessert and drinks.

Fall Holiday concert

The Oakhurst Community Band will present a “Fall Holiday Concert,” 3 p.m., Nov. 22, at the Mountain Christian Center on Highway 49. There is no admission charge. Marches, holiday music, and a vocalist presentation will be included in the concert, one of three presented by the band each year.


El Niño preparation

Yosemite Lakes Owners Association and the Yosemite Lakes Community Church will present a Town Hall on El Niño preparation, 10 a.m. to noon, Nov. 14, at the YLOA Clubhouse (30250 Yosemite Springs Parkway). John Kirk, a state engineering geologist and emergency response expert who lives in YLP, is the featured speaker.
