A Mountain Area 10-and-under girls all-star softball team, Mountain Mayhem, is seeking community donations to help pay for a trip to the California State Games July 15 - 17, where it will compete in a tournament against 23 other teams from throughout the state.
The all-star team was put together from four 10-and-under teams that play in the Yosemite Girls Softball League. Mountain Mayhem is the first 10-and-under team from the Mountain Area to play in the state tournament.
The State Games is an amateur sports festival that started in 1988. More than 12,000 young athletes will competing in 22 different sports.
The team is coached by Nathan Hodges, the recently crowned All-Around Logger at the North Fork Logger’s Jamboree. Assistant coaches are Ryan Hansen, Lani Owen and Brooke Mello.
The team earned the invitation to compete in the tournament after placing fourth in the Central California Regional Tournament held June 24-26 in Hanford, winning three games and losing one.
Olympic style opening ceremonies for the games, including an athlete parade, a torch lighting and a fireworks display, will be held in Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Padres.
All the athletes will also be recognized during a Giants-Padres game.
“The members of this team have worked hard to get this invitation to the state tournament, and now they are working hard to raise the necessary funds to make the trip to San Diego,” Hodges said. “It’s going to cost about $7,000 in transportation, hotel rooms, and food for the team to have this opportunity.”
Round Table Pizza in Oakhurst is holding a fundraiser for Mountain Mayhem July 7, with 20% of sales going to the team.
Members of the team are Jadyn Johnson, Cassidy Kleinsmith, Lily Madaus, Jada Matthewson, Emma Blea, Khloe Owen, Jenna Sanchez, Danica Reyes, Cassie Hansen, Cheyenne Matyshock, Aiyana Bos, Lacie Bebout and Clowey Alberta.
Anyone wishing to donate to the team should contact Ryan Hansen (559) 760-4423, or Brooke Mello, (559) 760-5779.
