The Mountain Area Boys Basketball Tournament was held April 7 at Yosemite High School, with the Oak Creek Intermediate School Raiders going home with the championship trophy at the end of the day.
This was a double elimination tournament, meaning a team had to lose twice to be eliminated.
The Raiders played five games on the day, with three of them against Wasuma Elementary.
First the Raiders played North Fork Elementary winning 37 to 11. The top scorer in the game was Jackson Thearle for the Raiders with 11 points.
OCI then played Wasuma and lost 40-28. OCI went into the loser’s bracket and played Coarsegold Elementary. Both teams played very well, with OCI pulling out the 24-20 win.
OCI then faced Wasuma for the second time, but unlike the first game, this one went into sudden death overtime after the game was tied at 16 each during regulation play.
In the overtime, OCIs Owen Bazzar hit a three-pointer to win the game.
OCI and Wasuma had to play for the thid time, after each team suffered one loss. In the championship game, OCI got off to a fast start as Thearle made four consecutive three-point shots. Owen Bazzar added another three.
The 19-10 win gave OCI the championship.
In addition to Bazzar and Thearle, OCI team members were Steven Nguyen, Daylen Datchuck, Koa Estella, Thomas Garner, Jensen Pincus, Hayden Marr, Brandon Garrett, Bo Alec, Ethan Coffman, and Jacob Conti.
The team was coached by Erik Peterson and the team manager was Emma Fries.
