The YHS track team participated in the Sanger Easter Classic on March 22, taking on 38 teams that participated in one of the largest track team events in the Central Section.
Top section track programs such as Clovis West, Buchanan, Clovis North, and Centennial competed. The Easter Classic consists mostly of relay events with some individual races and includes all field events. Participation is based on performance, so only the best get to participate.
“The Easter Classic is a challenging meet,” head coach Walker Vaughn said. “Despite the cold and windy conditions, our girls had a strong meet, especially our 4x100 relay team. Sayda (Taylor) also had a good meet. She continues to improve and is doing it against top competitors. She is still learning technique as she is only a freshman and this is her first year running track. She has great potential.”
Taylor, a freshman, took the spotlight for Yosemite’s track team at the meet. Individually, she was second in the high jump at 5-foot-2 (tied for fourth all-time at YHS), and third in the 100 meter dash at 12.96 seconds, although her best time early in the season is 12.73. Riley Cooks owns the record at 12.65, set in 2010.
Taylor said she was excited for her first high school season, and that she hoped to catch a few Badger records.
“I’m very excited, I didn’t think I was going to do this well, honestly,” Taylor said. “But I want to do track all four years of high school and maybe get a scholarship one day.”
Taylor, an athlete in volleyball, soccer, and track before coming to Yosemite, was also ninth in the long jump with a mark of 14-9 at the meet.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Daytona Tuso, Peyton Garner, Chloe Duke, and Taylor were fourth overall with a time of 52.63 - second fastest in YHS history (50.48 in 1983). The Badger relay team can compete with anyone in the section. The time they set is No. 18 overall in the Central Section and is the fastest time of the year so far for the Sierra/Sequoia Division (D-III, IV, and V).
Taylor and Espe ranked in Central Section
Taylor has already earned top marks in the Central Section regardless of division. According to Dyestat.com in partnership with Athletic.net, Taylor is ranked ninth overall in the 100m with her time of 12.73, and is No. 2 amongst freshman.
She is No. 7 in the section at the 200m, at 26.38 and second all-time at YHS. Kim Eames holds the record at 26.17 in 1999. Taylor is ninth overall in the high jump at 5-2.
Junior Elyse Espe is ranked No. 15 in the section in the 300m hurdles with a time of 50.03. Espe owns a personal best time of 47.25 (No. 4 all-time in YHS). Espe’s best time would have a top ranking in the section.
The Yosemite Invitational
The YHS track team is getting ready for the 12th Annual Yosemite Invitational track meet, set for 3 p.m. on Friday, April 3, at Badger Stadium. The YHS Invitational will showcase 22 high school track teams including section powers Clovis East, and Sanger. Sierra/Sequoia powers Kingsburg and Selma will also be there. Buchach Colony of Atwater competing in the Sac-Joaquin Section will compete as well.
“The Invitational has become a pretty solid meet,” Vaughn said. “We have a good mix of good track programs from big and small schools in the Valley. We hope to see a lot of community support. It should be a fun meet.”
