Once again our nation’s flag has been directed by the president to be flown at half-staff to honor a fallen American or victims of terrorist attacks in other lands. I understand there have been 67 such directives under the current administration, which apparently is a record for any president. On this issue of directing the flag to fly at half-staff I have no quarrel with our president. However, I am tired of seeing Old Glory flying in such a position on each flagpole. Too many victims.
When Harry Truman died in December of 1972, the flags were directed to be lowered to half-staff for 30 days, which is how America shows respect to former presidents. Before those 30 days were over, Lyndon B. Johnson died and we had the same directive which meant the flags were lowered in honor of two presidents at the same time.
During the 30 days following Johnson’s death, our Vietnam prisoners of war were starting to come home. I remember LBJ’s wife asking that the flags be hoisted prior to the end of the 30-day period so our returning heroes wouldn’t see the flag of their country anywhere but at the top of the flag poles. It was a gracious gesture by “Lady Bird” Johnson.
The flag was at half-staff for JFK, later for Martin L. King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy. Those were times when that gesture seemed uncommon. But unfortunately the need to honor people who have died at the hands of terrorists is becoming too common. Between terrorism and now the assault upon our heroes in law enforcement, we are seeing too much carnage. Enough is enough.
The president hides his head in the sand and his cohort of yes men don’t face up to the reality that the only way to deal with terrorists is to kill them. They must be ferreted out and their lives need to come to abrupt ends. You cannot deal or negotiate with them, just as you cannot negotiate with a rabid dog.
Our Oval Office occupant can’t even say the name of the responsible group for a number of reasons. He can’t turn on people of his own heritage. He can’t admit Islam has been hijacked and that the religious component of the terrorism must be dealt with. He cannot admit when he pulled back troops during the successful purge (his words, not mine) that he did not go far enough to defeating the terrorists. The former community organizer still sees climate change as a greater threat than terrorism and the Attorney General wants us to exhibit more love toward them.
Trump gets lambasted for asking for a delay in allowing certain folks to enter the USA until we can ascertain who they are. Try to get into the White House and they check who you are. Hillary doesn’t want a wall but look at the Clinton fortress in New York and there is a large fence with armed guards to protect the lady who is lauded as one of the brightest people, yet unsophisticated when it comes to understanding what classified means. Her philandering husband must have a difficult time getting his young ladies past the guards so he must go elsewhere to meet interns.
Our president promised to be the healer of race relations and yet race relations have become worse under his administration. He gives presidential nods to the Black Lives Matter crowd even though they chant, “Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon” when they protest the police. The BLM people in Dallas looked to the cops when the ambush started and five Dallas cops died.
Sunday morning three police officers died in an ambush in Baton Rouge. The words will come from the White House calling for more legislation to control guns and the NRA will get blamed in the process. The NRA gets blamed for every shooting but the shooters haven’t been members of the NRA.
My concern is that if people feel safe enough to fire upon armed officers they will have little worry about coming after unarmed folks. The signs that state “Gun Free Zone” also mean the “Attacker will have the only weapon on the grounds.”
Terrorists in other parts of the world, and some here, do not fear the wrath of this government because this administration, with the cooperation of a lap-dog national media, will blame gun owners and will deny the involvement of Radical Islamic Terrorism even when the terrorists claim to be Radical Islamic Terrorists.
When the United States is led by a leader who decides to wage a war on terrorism and starts showing support for the police instead of the BLM movement, we will see a change for the better.
It will be great to see Old Glory flying at full staff more often than not.
